About EMRI
EMRI, is a non-profit organisation with a mission to save lives and bring hope through its emergency response services.
It is the India's largest ambulance chain. Tailored ambulance designs to varied geographical locations, such as EMRI ambulance boats for rescue operations in regions like Meghalaya (more water ways compared to road ways), accounting for unique climatic conditions.

About Research Translation Lab
At Research Translation Lab, our mission is to transform research into innovative digital products.
With a collaborative team comprising product managers, developers, architects, and UI/UX designers, we work seamlessly from problem identification to delivering tailored digital solutions. By empathizing with clients and thoroughly understanding their requirements, we ensure that our solutions not only meet but exceed their expectations. Our focus on user interface and experience ensures that every application we deliver is intuitive, engaging, and user-friendly.
Client’s Context
To understand the problem statement
EMRI, which initially operated entirely manually, from ambulance assignments to patient vital documentation and hospital handovers, recognized the global shift towards AI and sought to modernize its system. Acknowledging the potential of technology in enhancing life-saving efforts, EMRI approached Research Translation Lab to collaborate on integrating AI into their operations. They have an existing application in place, but it's solely used for navigation.
Objectives & Goals
Understand ambulance operations thoroughly by doing user research, understanding pain points.
Implement AI to enhance Pre-hospital care inside the ambulance.
Reduce manual tasks through AI integration for time efficiency and increased life-saving opportunities.
Research & Teamwork
A glimpse into the collaboration, user research, and hands-on efforts that brought the EMRI project to life.

Focus Group Discussion
We identified the following Key findings in the EMRI services that require immediate attention.
During the focused group discussion, EMRI stakeholders and experts, including IIIT researchers, the COO, City Operation Head, Technical Partner Head, Product Manager, and UI/UX Designer, collaborated to identify challenges and explore potential technical solutions.

EMT Assistant Workload
The EMT Assistant's hands are primarily occupied with treating patients, making it challenging to fill out vital information in the Patient Care Report (PCR) form.
Monitoring EMT Assistant Actions
There is currently no effective way to monitor and verify whether EMT Assistants have completed all necessary steps. This poses a risk in case certain steps are omitted.
Quick Decision-Making for Doctors
Doctors face difficulty in quickly referencing books or manuals to make critical decisions in high-pressure situations when responding to EMT Assistants.
Essential steps are not being done by EMT's
Remembering and executing all 60 chief complaint steps can be overwhelming for EMTs. Ensuring that EMT Assistants complete all steps accurately is a significant challenge.
Limited Doctor Intervention
Doctors unable to intervene promptly due to one-way communication, impacting critical case identification.
User Observation & Research
Emphathising with the user by spending three days in EMRI ambulance
Certainly, based on our observations 3 days in an ambulance, here are the key points summarizing into the challenges faced by EMRI EMT assist during ambulance ride.
Ambulance Noise: Communication and Concentration Hurdles
EMT Motivation: Impact on Patient Care
Patient Family Stress: Ambulance Environment Havoc
Limited Ambulance Space: Constraints on Patient Care

User Persona
I created a user persona to keep my target user at the forefront of my design process

Point of Intervention
I identified key pain points for EMT Assistants to design solutions that enhance efficiency, reduce cognitive load, and ensure seamless access to vital information.
- EMTs are failing to execute vital steps as part of their protocol. - Recording vital signs at each stage is time-consuming due to EMTs' hands being occupied with patient examination, including instances where they are exposed to bodily fluids. - Doctors lack timely awareness of critical cases as they are not updated on the patient's journey until hospital arrival, resulting in delays in intervention. This is compounded by the time it takes for EMTs to relay vital sign recordings and for doctors to consult protocol materials during emergencies.
Ideation
As a team, we explored various concepts, possibilities, and execution strategies to enhance the EMT Assistants' experience.

Selected Features: Turning Ideas into Action
EMT Assist
Develop a mobile application guiding EMTs through protocol steps in real-time.
Voice based E-pcr
Implement checklists or digital prompts on mobile devices to ensure adherence to vital steps.
Doctor’s Assist
Establish a secure communication platform connecting ambulances to doctors.
Final Designs - MVP
EMT Assist
A voice-based checklist where EMTs can respond with "Yes" or "No," allowing the system to act as an assistant—helping them follow essential steps for each chief complaint without relying on memory.
Voice based E-pcr
To ensure accuracy in the E-PCR form, the system must capture correct medical terms and eliminate errors, with an extra confirmation popup for vital information to prevent any mistakes in critical healthcare data.

EMT login made simple with mobile number and OTP verification for quick and secure access.
For new patients, a quick popup on the home screen flashes with simple Accept or Cancel buttons, along with easy-access Call and Location icons for seamless interaction.

Doctor’s Assist

The Doctor Assist Screen lets doctors monitor 25 ambulances, chat with EMTs, share medical protocols, and prioritize critical patients using color-coded alerts for quick action.

A Chatbot Assistant enables real-time communication between doctors and EMTs, providing instant guidance on critical patient care until hospital arrival.
Doctors can instantly access and share medical protocols through the knowledge base for quick decision-making.

Color-coded ambulance info changes on hover, visually indicating emergency status for faster doctor decisions.

Design Workflow & Collaboration
Streamlining Design Processes for Smooth Collaboration
Design Impact
Enhancing Emergency Care, One Step at a Time
My Learning
What This Project Taught Me
Clear and structured design handoffs are crucial for smooth collaboration between design and development. Proper file labeling, well-documented wireframes, and a scalable design system ensure consistency and save time during product iterations. I worked closely with developers to ensure the correct implementation of designs, regularly reviewing builds and addressing gaps. By maintaining organized assets and a shared understanding, we streamlined the development process, reduced errors, and enhanced the overall product experience.
From 60% to 90% completion
EMTs complete all critical steps with a voice-based checklist.
50% reduction in time
Response time cut from 7 mins to 2 mins
Response time cut from 7 mins to 2 mins
Streamlined doctor-EMT communication for urgent cases.
Observing EMTs in action revealed hidden challenges—ambulance noise, patient distress, and environmental factors that could impact a voice-based system. EMT Assist professionals hesitated to share their struggles, fearing job security. Gaining their trust was essential to understanding real pain points. A well-designed product isn’t just about aesthetics; true success comes from addressing user challenges through research, collaboration, and practical solutions.
